1. Have your heating or cooling equipment checked each and every season by a qualified technician to make sure it is operating properly. Heating and cooling account for about half of the energy costs for the average home.

2. Whenever possible, cool your home naturally. For example, you can plant shade trees around your house (especially on the east and west sides). Their protection keeps the sun from beating on your roof and siding during the summer, which can naturally keep your home 4 degrees cooler. (Trees also help insulate your house against cold winds in the winter.)

3. Seal your house to protect against heat loss in cold weather. Seal the ductwork, close the fireplace damper when it's not in use, and install a timer on the bathroom exhaust fan.

4. Clean or replace window unit or central air conditioning system filters monthly. Dirty filters cause air conditioners to work harder and use more energy.

5. Set the thermostat on the highest comfortable setting. Raising the temperature just 2 degrees can reduce cooling costs by as much as 5 percent. Again, look into a programmable thermostat.

6. Make sure heating registers and vents are not blocked by draperies, furniture or rugs. These vents should also be cleaned regularly with a vacuum or a broom.

1. Don’t delay when you need air conditioner or heater repair. If you smell gas, send everyone out of your home and call your gas provider’s emergency telephone number immediately.
